Understanding COPD: Beyond Shortness of Breath

COPD can make breathing a challenge.  Symptoms often include a persistent cough, feeling winded easily (shortness of breath), wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), and tightness or pressure in your chest.  As COPD progresses, everyday activities may become difficult.  People with COPD are also more susceptible to lung infections like influenza (the flu) and pneumonia, which can worsen symptoms (flare-ups or exacerbations).

Millions of Americans already have COPD, a major cause of death in the US, but experts believe many more have it unknowingly.

Fortunately, there are treatment options available.  These include various inhalers to manage symptoms, pulmonary rehabilitation (a program to improve breathing and exercise capacity), and support to help you quit smoking, if applicable.

The Pulmonary Trials Cooperative made a significant impact on lung disease research.  Spanning over 50 institutions, this program brought together patients, researchers, and healthcare professionals with a common goal.  They conducted three clinical trials specifically targeting COPD, aiming to develop new and effective treatments.

Are you a former smoker with COPD? Researchers are studying whether taking aspirin can help with COPD symptoms. Participants must be at least 40 years old, be diagnosed with COPD, and have a history of smoking at least 10 packs of cigarettes a year.

If so, you may be able to participate in a clinical trial at Spectrum Clinical Research, In this study, we are comparing two ways to encourage people to participate in pulmonary rehabilitation. Participants must be at least 40 years old and be willing to participate.

By participating, you'll be contributing to valuable medical advancements that could help others with COPD.
